In a way that I don't think I can describe this kind of story is scarier -- and more interesting-- than most death stories. This is a death of personality story. Ben did something he couldn't forgive himself for and had to go away in both the literal and figurative senses.
Ray's reaction is also interesting; he expects it, plans for it.
