Oh. Oh. This is tremendous. This is lovely. So very many lines that I loved. And how well you got into that cold, dead place in Ray's head, how he circles around it, seeing it distantly and trying to make himself think that he's all right. I love this perspective, and think you did a wonderful job with it.

This segment is just purely, purely Ray:
Some men owned what he'd always envied. He wanted McQueen's cool, that je ne sais Fuck You, not his own hotheaded bullshit. His bosses and his wife had nagged him to get it.

"Back off, Ray." "Kowalski! I said, leave it alone." "Get some perspective, detective."


I love Fraser tugging Ray aside, off-balance, and how freaked out Ray gets, loses his pretend cool real quickly. This was perfect:

Oh, fuck. No. That was wrong. One of them had to be happy, or it was all for nothing.

Gah. I'm not being clear, but I loved this, and am really glad you had a post-COTW story to be written.
