The other day I watched a documentary about portrayals of homosexuality in Hollywood films, The Celluloid Closet, which included some censored footage from Tarzan and His Mate, and it occurred to me that when it comes to a depiction of gender roles it’s hard to get more basic than “Me Tarzan, You Jane.”
