Hope you don't mind me jumping in but I think it's a really interesting question.
I think that maybe when Frannie gets a job (she does have odd ones in S1 & S2 and she obviously has one in S3) she does contribute a little bit.
Perhaps Maria might do a bit of work here and there but there's no canon evidence for it but then we don't see much of her at all. The kids might be her priority but she could be doing part time work.
Ray never seems to worry about money even when he gives $5000 out in One Good Man (which at $100 a person means he got 50 people into the council chambers) although he does have $1000 left to buy the Riv from Al. That $1000 could well have been money he was going to spend on insurance for the Riv (possibly, he does need it).
I like the idea that Ma Vecchio did come from money. After-all the Vecchios were able to afford a pretty nice house and bought it outright so Ray didn't have to worry about the mortgage (until VS but that's another question entirely).
Fanon has various rumous about whether Ray's Dad was involved in dodgy dealings since he spent a lot of the time at the pool hall mostly likely he was also an alcoholic which means he wouldn't be working much so his income had to come from somewhere, hence possibly dodgy dealings I guess.
That situation though kind of adds to the possibility there was money in Ma Vecchio's family or the Vecchios themselvese. I think it;s more likely to be the former.
I also suspect that Ray's father did have a life insurance policy which may have been used to pay off the mortagage.

Just my thoughts, hope you don't mind.
