Ray doesn't seem to worry about money, but he is conscious of it -- he talks about how expensive his clothes are (usually once they're ruined from dumpster diving or baby vomit *g*) and seems aware of the cost of things.

True and considering how much he ends up spending either because of his escapades with Fraser or giving it him directly he's always aware of the cost. Not that that stops him.

Frannie throws away $300 of his money by not bargaining the salesman down. So they can't be too strapped for cash, or she never would've done that, right?

I like to think Frannie wouldn't be so silly as to leave Ray in a bad financial position. Though you have to feel sorry for him, you drown your sister's hamster and they mmake you pay and pay and pay...;-)

I think how expensive the house was would strongly depend on how long it's been in the family. If they bought it early on, it might not signify wealth. And maybe the parents helped out with it. I don't really understand why it's in Ray's name and not Ma Vecchio's, though.

That's a good point. I've often thought that Ma Vecchio was born in Italy due to her slight accent but Ray's father might have been too though he has less of an accent and Ray does refer to himself as a 'second generation immigrant' in Starman so I think it would depend on when they came over. If they came over in the 50's they probably could have afforded the house more easily.

I always understood the house was in Ray's name due to the patriarchal nature of Italian-Amercians in that it's the men who control the property so on Mr Vecchio's death it would pass to his eldest surviving son who would then be the man of the family so to speak and therefore would take on the responsibility of the home and look after his mother.
