(Sorry I'm a little late here - my LJ comment notifications have been kind of dodgy lately.)
Anyway, yeah, what you're talking about there, with Mamet's character - that's what I was thinking when I saw MwG. Mamet is such an interesting, contradictory character, I wondered who this guy might be, but they never tell us in the movie. Most of the time he's drugged out and spacey, but then all of a sudden there are these moments of diamond-sharp focus, so much there behind his eyes, and I rather desperately needed to explain that. Then I noticed the Ray Bracelet on his wrist, and it just made an awful lot of sense for Mamet to be Ray, lost undercover.
Add to that the look on Ray's face the moment in Mountie on the Bounty right after he's punched Fraser, and my doom was pretty much sealed.
I'm so pleased this attempt at filling in the blanks felt right to you! Yay! :)
