I have to tell you the truth: I have never seen Men With Guns, know absolutely nothing about it, so this was a very pure experience for me, and I wanted you to know it works absolutely as a fantastic stand-alone, as a wonderful, complex story on its own merits.
Yay! And oh, no - I spoiled the end! Or at least Mamet's end. Although maybe not, as there's a fair bit of reference to "that scene" in the comments. sigh.
Anyway, thank you - it's great to hear this works as a stand-alone. As a 6degrees fic I suppose it doesn't need to, but it's always rewarding if something like this does stand on its own feet.
And yes, absolutely, Fraser's got that steel spine, the hardness underneath, he just doesn't enjoy accessing it. On the one hand, it's necessary for him to do his job, and to survive, but I think it unsettles him to give it any kind of rein. We see it in Bird In the Hand, too, and while it's fascinating to watch that ferocity surface rather suddenly the way it does, there's a moment afterward when he looks like he's just scared himself a little. *pets Fraser*
