I read this a while back, come by it from a link from a link from a link and I have NO idea who/where recommended it, but I keep returning to re-read it which I do NOT do with many fic.
I'll read just about anything, although I'm not much of a fan of crossovers because often they are just an excuse to throw well-loved characters together for some sexin' up (which, okay, I can get behind that, but that hardly makes them alluring). But knowing that crossovers CAN be done well, I read them, and I read this, despite having NO CLUE about this movie I have never heard of and Google told me was "Hombres armados" and set in South America. (wft moment, big time...I eventually found the right movie info, though) It was recced, so I read it.
Along with Nos' "Breaking the Waves," this stands as one of my favorite dS fics in the whole of the fandom. I still haven't seen the movie, although I've seen screen shots of Mamet, so I got a feel for the 'mood'...but who cares? You created an incredibly rich and heartbreaking background for Mamet by making him RayK, and your writing is as good as any movie for bringing CKR's grace and physicality alive. Fraser 'shadowing' Mamet/Ray is almost a sweet counterpoint to what is going on with the crazy boys (as I call them). Mamet/Ray's despair and hopelessness and yet primal cunning is terrifying to watch unfold here.
It might seem out of line after reading such a magnificent fic, but I'd love a sequel. Much as fandom often portrays RayV as unable to shake Armando, I can see that Mamet himself -- even more than the drug addiction -- will haunt RayK for the rest of his life. No doubt his career as a cop is over, but Fraser's isn't, so that 'world' of law, order, and civilization would always be at Ray's doorstep, taunting him. And once committed, Fraser will NEVER give up on Ray, and worse, will never allow Ray to give up on himself. The forces at work in their relationship would be of a titanic nature and while I TOTALLY BELIEVE they would survive because I am such a sucker for happy endings, I don't kid myself in thinking it won't be without a high price.
Which is to say, I would not be considering these questions if you had not written such a tight, hard-hitting, memorable story. Just...wow. Amazing. ♥
