You touched a very difficult subject here and handled it beautifully. This is such a human tale about life and death and saying goodbye... God, this just pushes all my buttons. I can't even begin to process all that you've shown me about these three characters, explicitly or implicitly. Your writing is so very detailed underneath the surface, in a way differentiated (if that's the word...); I can't put my thoughts into words just yet.
