Title: Bedtime
Genre: bedtime story
Rating: G
Characters: Ray Kowalski and his daughter, Ali
Length: 480 words
Notes: Thanks to my beta [livejournal.com profile] elementalv, who dredged this story up from the depths of pure sappiness and breathed new life into it.

When Ray told their daughter that Fraser wouldn't be back from patrol for three more days, Ali flipped out. She sobbed, she threw herself at the floor, she kicked, she broke things, and she screamed herself hoarse. It would have scared him, if he hadn't seen the same thing a dozen times over the months since they'd adopted her. Fraser said it was all perfectly normal for a four-year old child. Of course, he'd never actually seen her do it.

Ray finally got the kid tucked into bed. Ali was limp with exhaustion; face blotchy and tear-stained, still fever-hot. He started to tell her the story.

"Once upon a time, in a place not too far from here, there lived a Canadian goose named Ben. He was best friends with a half-wolf named Dief.

Ben and Dief decided to go on a big adventure. So they walked and they flew, and they walked and they flew, all the way south until they reached the Big City.

The City was full of pigeons, lots and lots of pigeons. Ben and Dief had never seen so many birds before. The pigeons all thought Ben was a big, good-looking bird, so they invited him to join their flock. But Ben didn't really fit in, so he was a little lonely.

Pretty soon he met a funny-looking pigeon named Ray. Ben and Ray were a great team. They took down all kinds of bad guys together: poachers, and smugglers, and polluters. And at night, Ray and Ben and Dief would hang out together and eat pizza.

Now, springtime came around. And you know what geese do in spring, right? They fly home.

So Ben told Ray that he might fly back north. And then Ray and Ben got mad, and pecked at each other a little bit. But they made up, and Ben said he would stay in Chicago.

Summer came, and fall, and winter, and then it was springtime again. And Ray could see that his friend Ben was feeling kind of homesick. So all three of them decided to go on an adventure together. They walked and they flew, and they walked and they flew, all the way north until they got home.

And then they lived happily ever after."

Ray bent down and kissed Ali's forehead. "Sweet dreams, darling." As he reached the door way he heard her voice.

"I like that story," she whispered.

"Me too," Ray said, and shut off the light.

Ray dragged himself out to the living room. He put more wood into the stove, picked up the wooden doll that Ali had stomped into pieces, and sat down on the couch. The doll didn't look fixable, but maybe, once Fraser got home, they could manage it. It wasn't worth the effort to get up and go to bed, so Ray pulled the afghan over himself and fell asleep.
