Fraser's a complex fellow, but he does tend to see the worst in himself. And he's a bit blind here towards Ray. I think anyone who speaks to his dead father on a regular basis would necessarily have a wider view of what's possible. And that's not even considering his shamanistic friend who turns into a Raven.
