I've just finished reading this, and I don't have a lot of commenting brain available to me at this juncture, but I do really want to say this profound thing: HEART. I have a dreadful weakness for selkie stories, and this just took that and travelled with it. Sweet, honest, sharply observed, and surprisingly believable.
