I keep looking for my comment, for the comment that I know I must have written to this when I first read it. But I can't find it. I don't know what happened.

Because this is beautiful and it deserves a comment. The writing is exquisite, every line interlocking perfectly with the one before thing and the whole thing sliding together until the entire story is powerful and devastating and terrible, at least insofar as it is painful.

Kowalski is so matter of fact throughout the story - as he would be - but I think that's the core of what makes the story work. You preserve the characterization flawlessly in action and dialogue and then you create this brilliant AU and it just works. So smart, mystery author. I'm very impressed.
