When I was small, we lived out in the country and had a party line. I recall several older ladies whose major entertainment was listening in on everyone elses calls, so this strikes a definite chord.

I had to do some research to make sure party lines are still used in parts of Canada. I couldn't get 2003 info, but they were used up into the mid-90s, so I used poetic license. I have a hunch some younger readers won't have heard of a party line until they read the story. :::feeling old:::
