Keys

Short, not really sweet, and kind of experimental.

On my first day, they hand me a key to my new locker. I wonder if they gave me a new one, or if I have to take his old locker.

Stupid question. Of course I don’t get my own locker. Got another guy’s partner, another guy’s desk, right?

I walk downstairs to the locker room. It’s huge, way bigger than the one at my old precinct. I’m moving up in the world, man. Nothing wrong with that.

I get to the locker. 246B. Yep, sure as shit, L. Giardino has been crossed out and T. Dewey has been scrawled underneath. There’s barely any room. I gotta get another label or something.

As I’m putting my stuff away, I notice a guy walking towards me. Tall, black, late 30’s. “Detective Dewey?” he says. “You’re lookin’ at him.” I say. He throws me a set of keys. “Desk, file cabinet, evidence locker, fleet car.” He pauses. “I’m Jack Huey.” So that’s the guy. “Hey, my new partner!” I lean over and slap him on the back. He stares at me for a minute with big, sad eyes. “Yeah” he says, and walks away.

I add the locker keys to the ring he gave me. I forgot to ask him which desk we were at, but he didn’t seem in the mood to talk. Sometimes it sucks being the new guy.
