The cell door doesn’t close with a ‘clang’, like I imagined. Instead, a ‘click’ seals my fate. I look at my home for the next ten years; all I see on the walls, bed, sink, bars, is his face as he keeps me warm, as he turns me in, as he saves my life only to let my soul die in this concrete hell.
*****
Funny how eternity can pass in a heartbeat. I revel in the wind on my face, the sun, the freedom like a glass of pure, fresh water. I can do anything, go anywhere.
He’s in Chicago.
