By kassrachel, for the ink challenge

When I saw that we were doing an "ink" challenge, my brain went to tattoos right away...

(If you want to learn more about Inuit tattooing, this article is pretty nifty.)

Tutaaq

Second tattoo was supposed to be easier. Lot of guys got addicted to the feeling: gritting your teeth, watching blood bead on your skin, new color underneath.

Ray's second happened a million miles away from his first one. Big Native guy in Yellowknife did the tutaaq, a swirl of blue lines over his left hip.

This time Fraser was there gripping his hand. Occasionally saying something to the guy in Inuktitut. His own hip still bandaged from his matching mark.

Inuit guys knew tattoos could protect you. Could change you. Or could show a change that had already happened, inside.
