When I saw that we were doing an "ink" challenge, my brain went to tattoos right away...

(If you want to learn more about Inuit tattooing, this article is pretty nifty.)

Tutaaq

Second tattoo was supposed to be easier. Lot of guys got addicted to the feeling: gritting your teeth, watching blood bead on your skin, new color underneath.

Ray's second happened a million miles away from his first one. Big Native guy in Yellowknife did the tutaaq, a swirl of blue lines over his left hip.

This time Fraser was there gripping his hand. Occasionally saying something to the guy in Inuktitut. His own hip still bandaged from his matching mark.

Inuit guys knew tattoos could protect you. Could change you. Or could show a change that had already happened, inside.

Nice. Very very very nice.

I love this. I have so much admiration for the punch you pack into a drabble.

a handful of words. A perfect Ray-voice. This wonderful picture in my head of this happening. If I didn't love you so much, I could hate you for being so. damn. talented.

Oh, lovely. I love the ideas of tattoos as protective markings. As as physical manifestations of inner realities.

WOW.

As always, you manage to pack a massive punch in a teeny package.

when this challenge came up I immediatly thought of "Indelible" and wondered if someone would do a tatoo story. I love your image of Ray and Fraser gripping hands as they go through the process/ceremony togethter.

My god - I never know whether to love or hate you. This is absolutely beautiful and moving and 100 words of perfection.

Completely amazed, dear.

I really like how you've managed to contain Ray's speech patterns -and- the emotion behind his words in such a succinct, straightforward manner. Very nice.
