"I don't know, Fraser. No offense or nothing, but you're maybe not the best judge," Ray said as Fraser held the door open for several people.
"Ray, do you trust me?" Fraser asked, finally ushering Ray out into the crisp winter evening.
Ray walked toward the alley where they'd left the car. "You know I do."
Fraser stopped him with a hand on his shoulder. "She was most certainly flirting with you."
He sounded just this side of snippy, but Ray just grinned and did a fast little shuffle. "I still got it."
"So it would seem," Fraser said drily.
Ray laughed and starting walking again. "Oh, don't be jealous."
"Why on earth would I be jealous?" Fraser asked. And look at that. Now Ray was pushing buttons he didn't even know existed, because Fraser was over the line and well on his way to out-and-out pissy.
"Well, I know most women usually fall all over themselves trying to get your attention, but just this once, this one time, Ms. Heward was flirting with me." Not that Ray could blame them. When Ray was being honest with himself, which was almost never, he had to admit he'd be damn happy if he could get Fraser to look at him the way women looked at Fraser.
Fraser snorted and, sounding colder than the night air, said, "You think I enjoy their fawning? They merely like what they see. They don't even know me."
"I didn't say that," Ray said quickly. Which did raise the question, though, didn't it? If Fraser wasn't jealous about not getting the attention, what was the problem? "So why do you sound like a green-eyed monster?"
"A green-eyed monster?" Fraser repeated.
And that was his fake-confused voice. Ray stopped by the Goat's trunk and faced Fraser. "Don't pretend you don't understand."
"Who even said I was jealous?" Fraser countered, with evasive move number two. He was for sure trying to hide something. Hah, good luck there, buddy, because Ray was an expert on Fraser.
"It's rude to answer a question with a question. And I said," Ray replied.
Fraser looked really tense, his face totally blank. "Well, you've misinterpreted," he said, but he was doing what he did when he was talking to skittish suspects, all fake calm and soothing. Something was not adding up.
"Liar," said Ray.
"Ray!" Fraser sounded offended, but he wasn't denying it. "I -" he began, but Ray held up his hand.
"Wait a second, I'm thinking here."
Fraser looked nervous, but he kept his mouth shut.
Ray ran back over the conversation in his head. Fraser was jealous, but not that the witness was flirting with Ray instead of Fraser. That left exactly one other option - that Fraser was jealous that she was flirting with Ray.
Hmm, that made a weird kind of sense. Fraser said he wanted someone who knew him, and Ray knew Fraser better than anyone around. It also made lots of other stuff click into place - the casual touching, the way they regularly walked so close they often bumped shoulders, arms, hands, how they followed each other into bizarre and dangerous situations, no questions asked.
Ray'd been so busy ignoring his own feelings, he'd completely missed all the clues. But now he was one hundred, no, one thousand percent sure, and he knew what he had to do.
Ray did a quick visual on the alley - it was deserted except for the two of them. Ray took a step towards Fraser.
Fraser took a step back.
"Fraser, my friend, I am an idiot," Ray said warmly.
"You are not!" Fraser protested.
"Generally speaking, I agree," Ray said conversationally, taking another step closer to Fraser, prompting Fraser to take an answering one back. "But in this particular case, I really am."
"And what case would that be?" Fraser had backed into the wall. He was standing ramrod straight and his voice sounded seriously strained, matching the expression on his face.
Ray answered matter-of-factly. "The case of the detective and Mountie who suck at seeing what's right in front of them."
Fraser looked completely lost. "I'm afraid I don't understand."
"This, Fraser. This," Ray said, reaching to cup Fraser's cheek.
Fraser's eyes went wide, his mouth shaping an "oh," and then Ray was bringing their lips together in a sweet, soft kiss.
Ray forced himself to pull away before things got too interesting and looked Fraser in the eye. "You got it now?"
"I believe I do," Fraser replied seriously.
"And we're good?" Ray knew the answer, but it had to be asked, had to be answered.
"Oh, yes," Fraser said vehemently.
The world spun and Ray found himself pressed against the cool bricks, Fraser's tongue exploring his mouth like it held the key to solving a case. Which Ray supposed it did. It was just that, as of now, the case was closed.

Also, since today was apparently Clueless Writes for Isis Day, I finally got around to writing the Benton Fraser meets James Bond ficlet over here (http://lilac-one.livejournal.com/148938.html?thread=440778#t440778). Enjoy!

I have it linked and I am totally going to get around to reading it Real Soon Now. (I'm trying to write my second prompt, which is being recalcitrant.)

You know, if you ever felt like you needed an Isis Writes for Clueless Day, I'd be all over that.
