[admin post] Admin Post: Community Guidelines & Challenge Suggestions

This post contains:
  • Community Guidelines

  • Posting Format

  • Challenge Suggestions

Community Guidelines
These are mostly the previous guidelines with a couple of alterations for changing times.
  1. Post your works to this comm until the current challenge is over. Then you are free to post wherever you like

  2. In line with other due South comms (such as the Big Bang), we will allow 6 Degrees of Canada fandoms to participate. See Fanlore link for info on what that consists of.

  3. Challenges will run from Sunday to Sunday, with a new one posting every two weeks. You have until midnight Chicago time (UTC-6, or CST) to post for a current challenge. I'll put the new challenge up a few hours before that.

  4. Tag your entry with the current challenge tag.

  5. Word Count - Exception to posting on this comm: If you word count exceeds the posting limit, please feel free to post elsewhere and link here. The minimum word count is 100 words.

  6. Please do not link back to locked journals or elsewhere the members of this comm cannot access.

  7. Ratings and warnings: Please use the AO3 ratings as well as the major warnings. Additionally, please give consideration to things that do not fall under AO3's major warnings but might be triggering to some.

Challenge idea: Cryptids. The Great Lakes, Canada, and northern US have many tales of mysterious cryptids (bigfoot, sea monsters in the lakes, more), which might inspire a story. Or you could just run with it (there is a were-otter due South fanfic out there somewhere) and go in whatever direction the idea of cryptids inspires.

Heh, I'm glad you went ahead and suggested this idea that you had earlier!

*scampers off to keep working on fic for tonight's deadline in this comm*

How about a bad!fic challenge?

[personal profile] ride_4ever 2019-09-30 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in doing a bad!fic challenge.

...replying to this only a year and a half late, haha. But! I loved playing in the two badfic challenges that ran when the comm was over on LJ, and I bet there'd be some interest in one again, if y'all wanted to give it a whirl? Seems like a good way to kickstart interest in writing here, tbh.

Let's see if we can get a bad!fic challenge going now! I've commented to my co-mods and to the rest of the comm about current interest.

(And would you give me links to the bad!fic you wrote for the original comm on LJ?)

I mean, if we could get this off the ground quickly enough, this would be fun to do around April Fools?

Also, I dug up my two previous entries, which were probs under my author tag?

There's going to be a post up soon for doing a bad!fic challenge, so it will indeed work out for around the time of April Fools, although I don't yet know if we will be calling it an April Fools challenge (depends on the not-yet-decided posting deadline for the fic).

TYK for your fic links! Will read fic later (I'm at work right now).

TYK, [personal profile] kinetikatrue, for challenge suggestion and for the links to your earlier bad!fic. I've read and commented on your bad!fic there, and now I'm hoping you'll be signing up to do bad!fic for this bad!fic challenge

Oh, I'm definitely planning on signing up! I'm just a) still trying to decide what to prompt for (gotta go big or go home, lol) and 2) distracted by trying to convince more people to play, as well, particularly newbies. Which has led to me running into the fact that fandom culture has changed a ton since this last ran? And also that, I think, part of what made this really successful in the past was that people felt like they could prompt whatever AND expect the mods to assign them something they could write because we had history with each other. And I'm def running into newbies who are a bit...but what if I get assigned something I can't write?? Can't I just treat? Or pinch hit?

...so you can maybe see what I mean about cultural changes over the past decade and change, haha.

<3 your "go big" comment! *g*

Not to disparage newbies -- all fen were newbies once -- but if a particular fan is like "What if I get assigned something I can't write?? Can't I just treat? Or pinch hit?" and they "need convincing" rather than they jump right in with willingness to "play by the rules" this particular fic challenge just may not suit that particular person or persons. That being said, I still admire your fannish spirit for trying to bring more fen into the dS fold -- I'm working it from the "other end," contacting fen who have written dS but not recently and encouraging them to join this challenge.

And I am totes hearing you on what you're saying about changes in fandom culture. I've been around long enough to remember what it was like to have a fair number of fen in a challenge in this fandom where I'd at least interacted previously with them in LJ or DW or AO3, and in some cases even knew them IRL from going to the same cons.
