The Wolf and the Turtle
Author:

Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: G
Challenge: Vital Clue Challenge
Word Count: 632
Notes: This is the first fanfic I've ever posted. It hasn't been betaed, since I don't know how one goes about finding one.
Summary: Fraser and Ray come home to a baffling mystery.
"I must confess myself frankly stunned. When you claimed that the turtle and the wolf are natural enemies, I had thought you were ..."
"Lying."
"Engaging in hyperbole."
"Lying."
"Exaggerating."
"Lying."
"Well, yes, lying. But now this ..." Fraser waved a hand to encompass the crime scene.
When Ray and Fraser had walked into the apartment, they were greeted with the sight of the turtle, lying on his back in the corner. With a very clear set of wolf-prints around it, apparently made in powdered sugar.
The turtle had been restored to his home, pampered with extra succulent lettuce and was seemingly none the worse for wear. But the mystery remained unsolved.
"Ray, when we came home, Dief was nowhere near the turtle."
This is met with a growl "Because, when we came home, Dief was curled up on my bed, which, by the way, I am not ok with."
"Just think about it, if Diefenbaker had indeed attacked the turtle, why would he then just leave it? It really doesn't make any sense."
"Yeah, well, who can fathom the innermost whatsits of the mind of the wolf?"
"True enough" Fraser sighs resignedly. "Well, after all this excitement, can I make you a cup of coffee?"
"Thanks Frase, but I shouldn't, I just had one."
"Hmm."
"What?"
"Oh, nothing, nothing. So, did you have a productive day while I was on guard duty?"
"Not so much, just, you know, ploughing through paperwork at the precinct."
"Hmm."
"What?"
"Oh, nothing. So you were at your desk all day?"
"Yes, why?"
"Nothing. Would you excuse me a moment?"
"Fraser, what are you doing? You know I'm not comfortable with you going in my kitchen."
"Well Ray, something about this whole scenario seems wrong somehow." He picks up something from the bench, examines it with a satisfied grunt and returns to sit beside Ray.
"Ray, I know you engineered this whole tableaux, why don't you tell me about it?"
"What?" Ray explodes from the couch and starts striding about the room, gesturing wildly. "There's no way, how could you know that?"
"Well, the vital clue was that you recently had coffee. I know that when you make coffee at home, you like to add these." He brandishes the box of smarties he has picked up from the bench. "Equally, I know that you finished your box this morning. I distinctly remember remarking to you on the wisdom of so much sugar, so early in the morning."
"Yeah, well I remember, distinctly, telling you you're not my mum."
"That's as may be, but to return to the matter at hand, this packet is open, and a small handful is missing. Thus I can conclude that the cup of coffee you have recently had, you made right here. So you cannot have been at the precinct all day, as you claimed. You were, in point of fact, here, putting an inordinate amount of effort into framing Diefenbaker for crimes of which he is entirely innocent. Why would you do that?"
"I'm not admitting anything."
"You don't need to Ray; since I know you did it."
"Did not."
"Did too."
"Did not."
"Ray."
"Oh, all right, I did. But he started it!"
"For heaven's sake, Ray, he's just a wolf."
"Just a wolf, nothing. I'd had a rotten day, came home early, with a special doughnut that I'd been promising myself all day. I turn my back for a moment, and he wolfs it down, like a, like a ..."
"Like a wolf?"
"Yes! My doughnut!"
"So?"
"So, he left those paw-prints, and it gave me the idea. I just wanted him to get in trouble."
"Ray, wouldn't it have been much easier if you gave him a telling him off?"
"You know he never listens to me, and besides, I like see you cross at someone else for a change."
