door challenge, again
Oct. 8th, 2003 11:50 pmStories like this hurt my brain to write. At least it's short.
160 words.
"That's the last coat, I think."
"I believe you're right."
Ray steps back, brush in hand, to admire his handiwork. "That is a damn fine door, if I do say so myself." He grins, squinting from the glare of late afternoon sunlight on the last of the spring snow.
Fraser smiles back at him. "It is at that, Ray."
"It's a damn fine cabin, too. We did good." Ray glances over, eyes crinkling. His free hand wanders over and brushes through Fraser's. When he looks down, the smile is gone from his face. "Sorry ... I keep forgetting."
"Ray." Fraser closes his eyes, jaw clenching with effort, then twines his fingers with Ray's. Ray squeezes his hand. "You did a beautiful job."
"Couldn't have done it without you, Ben." He inclines his head toward the house. "Come on inside. And no walking through the walls this time. It creeps me out when you do that."
Fraser squeezes back. "As you wish."

Date: 2003-10-09 10:41 am (UTC)I loved this. Really loved it. Though it feels like one of the two most unfair things that can possibly happen!
It felt especially gripping that Ray grins, is taking the matter more or less in stride. And the shortness is very effective in this story.
You're the one did a beautiful job, brava!
