it's sort of pre-make-up
Ray licked the blood off his knuckles and stared at Fraser with wide eyes. In startling contrast to the manic storm of energy that had been building inside him for the last few weeks, now there was nothing but silence and stillness; the drip, drip, drip of water falling off his clothes, the frantic hammering of his heart.
Fraser hadn't said anything, hadn't moved, hadn't swung back, and now Ray knew that he wasn't going to. Fraser just lifted his head and looked at Ray, and his eyes were dead and empty.
Still as stone, Ray didn't breathe as he watched Fraser walk away. "Oh god, oh god, what have I done?" he thought, knowing that some things just can't be apologized for.
The wind off the lake was strong, but that wasn't why Ray was shivering.
