Catching up here and chiming in late. I think this is a very believable ending. I'm assuming you chose March 11 as the birthdate deliberately?
I loved your comment above: To me, Ben's emotions always seem ancillary - like he's not supposed to have them. And that he puts others needs before others, as he perceives them. Ray just wants to be loved, and settled for something pretty good when something great was denied him.
