My first real attempt at due South. Ice in 100 words...
He was a fine man, although he was aloof, he was a good officer, a good son and a good husband. He did his best when confronted with the sharp ache of loss, the murder of his wife and the bewildering needs of a motherless young son. His reason for living had been taken from him, all he had left was duty.
As a child I never had the chance to match my impressions of him with reality. To me he was a night spent out in the cold; a man who only saw the distance through ice-coated eyelashes.
