I don't believe for a second that Bob didn't love his son. Not ever. He just didn't know how to express that love to Ben, and his ineptitude at expressing it only increased as the years passed. I think to open himself up and express that love for his son, he would also leave himself vulnerable to being socked with the grief for Caroline he so often kept in check, so it was a risk he often didn't want to take.
