Prompt 14: Kowalski (any slash pairing). "When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up to be a firefighter. Never cared about cops, but firemen -- firemen were nearly as cool as Steve McQueen."
Title: Dare
Rating: PG
Pairing: F/K
Notes: 518 words. Thanks to
onnada, my non-due South watching beta. For the awesome
sageness, who did a lot of work so this party would turn out as great as it is.
“Truth or dare.”
“Truth.”
Ray rolled his eyes – they’d done 15 ‘truths’ in a row, but they kept picking it. Fraser, of course, didn’t want Ray to make him do anything outrageous, while Ray knew that Fraser couldn’t come up with any good dares, especially when they were in the middle of a stakeout. That had reduced them to truth after truth.
“Ok, um…did you always want to be a Mountie?”
Fraser put on his thinking face, and was quiet for a moment. “I suppose I did. I just never saw myself as anything else.” He paused a moment, then said, “It was expected of me, and so I didn’t consider any other possibilities.”
Ray nodded. Sure his partner was a freak, but he was a predictable freak. Tell him he has a duty to do something and he’ll do it without even thinking of what he wants.
Fraser shifted a little in his seat – they were nearing the end of the stakeout and even his perfect Mountie ass was probably getting sore. “Truth or dare?” “Truth.”
Fraser gave him a serious look, and said, “I know that you didn’t always want to be a police officer, but what did you want to do before then?”
Huh. "When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up to be a firefighter. Never cared about cops, but firemen - firemen were nearly as cool as Steve McQueen." Ray stopped. That was in no way the whole story, but if he wanted to hear the rest he’d have to ask for it.
Fraser licked his lips, and asked, “Why did you decide not to be a firefighter?”
Ray sighed, and said “This one time I was walking home from school, there was a big fire in an apartment building. Everyone had stopped to watch, so there was this huge crowd just standing there while the firemen tried to get people out.” Ray stopped a minute to relive the memory.
“There was this one kid standing at a window near the top floor, and they couldn’t get to him. The stairs had all collapsed; the building was gonna go any minute. So, I watched as this little kid tried to jump out the window to get away.”
Fraser watched him intently, urging him on with his eyes. Ray continued, “He made this horrible sound when he hit the pavement – died as soon as he hit. ‘S why I’m afraid of heights, too. Give me gangs and jumpers any day, at least you can try and talk sense into them. No sense in a fire like that Frase.”
There was a pause, as both participants felt the need for a moment of silence after such a story. Then: “Truth or dare.” “Truth.” Ray grinned. “How much do you want me at this moment?” Whoa, that got Fraser going: there’s nothing that turns my crank faster than a lusty Mountie aimed in my direction. “Oh, quite a bit Ray.”
Fraser licked his lips again, this time with intent. “Truth or dare.” Ray smirked at him as he broke the chain. “Dare.”
