Do you think I’m mushy?
Ray could hardly wait until they got out of the judicial building. It had been long and frustrating, and right now all he wanted to do was go home and relax. However, there seemed to be something on Fraser’s mind.
“Ray, do you think I’m mushy?” The words echoed in the stairwell.
“No, Benny, you’re not mushy.”
“Then why did you accuse me of being mushy earlier?”
“I accused you?”
“You said and I quote; ‘All right, all right, don’t get mushy on me.’”
“Benny, we were in a gunfight, it wasn’t really the time.”
“Still, Ray, I wanted to tell you that despite our disagreements we’re still very good…”
“Don’t say it!”
“Why not, Ray? It’s true.”
“Yeah it’s true, so don’t jinx it.”
“I’m not quite sure what you mean, Ray.”
“You say the words and you’ll jinx it.”
“You’re not that superstitious are you, Ray?”
“Who’s superstitious?”
Fraser just looked at him. The look that said; ‘that’s just silly, Ray’.
“Okay, maybe I am, but there’s a good reason.”
“There is?”
“Yes.”
“Ah, would you mind explaining it?”
“No.”
“You would mind?”
“No, I wouldn’t.”
“Would you mind explaining it now?”
“Okay.” Ray stopped them at the bottom of the stairwell. He stood facing Fraser.
After a long pause Fraser spoke again, “Ray?”
“Look we’re really good, you know,” Ray shrugged a shoulder. “You’re my best friend but the beauty of…what we have... is that we never have to say it. A lot of people, they say things like; ‘You’re my best friend’, when they’re drunk, and they don’t mean it, but we mean it every time we say it. But the great thing is, we just know we are, that’s why we don’t have to say it. We know how we feel about each other, so we never say the words, because if we do say them it’ll jinx it.”
“You know how I feel about you?”
“Yeah.”
“Is that why you were upset about my semaphore to Inspector Thatcher?”
“Benny, I was not upset.”
“You were clearly annoyed, Ray, and it’s only just occurred to me why.”
“Why then, if you’re so sure?”
“Because if you feel how I feel about you, then I would be jealous. In fact, I have been jealous, of your advances towards women.”
“Fraser, what are you talking about?”
“Our feelings for each other, Ray. We’ve never expressed them to each other.”
“Benny, we’ll jinx it.”
“No, we won’t, Ray. It’s an irrational fear, possibly due to the social influences you had growing up.”
“But if we say it that’s it.”
“Yes, Ray and I’d like it to be it.”
“I’m not talking just it here, Fraser. I’m talking about a major change.”
“Well, it wouldn’t be that much of a change, as we have acted on our feelings.”
“Yeah, but then no more pretending, no more chasing women, no more hiding in the closet.”
“I like hiding in the closet, Ray.”
“I mean like a metaphor.”
“Ah.”
“Okay, I’ll say it.”
“I don’t want you to think I’m forcing you into it.”
“You’re not. I mean I should have told you years ago.”
“But you didn’t, because we knew how we felt and you were afraid of the commitment.”
“Yeah, but you didn’t say it because you were afraid of the commitment.”
“That’s true, Ray.”
You? Afraid of commitment?”
“It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever said in my life.”
“You’ve said it to other people.”
“One person.”
“That’s it?”
“Yes.”
“I’ve said it to more than one person.”
“But not like this.”
“No, not like this.”
“Are you ready, Ray?”
Ray shuffled his feet. “Yeah.”
“Shall I go first?”
“Nah, I’ll be the mushy one.”
“All right, Ray. On three?”
“Okay.”
“One, two, three.”
Ray took a deep breath. “Benny, you’re my best friend and…I love you.”
“Thank you, Ray. You’re my best friend and I love you too.”
“So what do we do now, Benny?”
“We kiss, Ray.”
“Oh I can do that.”
“That’s good, Ray.”
“Yeah.”
“No more talking.”
Ray took the hint and kissed Fraser. He hoped none of the SWAT team outside were going to burst in. It would be just his luck to be kissing Fraser and have the FBI appear. Luckily, they had total peace and quiet.
When the kiss ended, Ray was grinning.
“Benny?”
“Yes, Ray?”
“You want to get mushy back at my place?
“I thought you’d never ask. I have to ask though, how mushy?”
“Oh, we’ll be getting very mushy, Benny.”
“I’m glad, Ray. I’m glad.”
As they walked to the Riv, Fraser looked slightly worried.
“Benny? You okay?”
“Yes, Ray I’m fine, but what am I going to do about the Inspector’s coffee? I am due back at the consulate.”
“So call the consulate and tell them you’ll be late because you have to catch a seal poacher.”
“In Chicago?”
“Okay, tell them you’re not feeling well and I’m talking you home.”
“I’m feeling fine, Ray.”
“Are you sure? Because, you know, feeling mushy can be a serious thing.”
“Oh. Oh I see, Ray. Well, yes, I am feeling mushy, and you’re right, there is only one cure.”
“There is?”
“Yes, I think I’ll have to show you, Ray.”
“You know, Benny, this mushy thing? It’s contagious.”
“Then we’ll have to share the cure, Ray.”
“I’m glad about that.”
“Oh, and, Ray, I love you.”
Ray smiled. He was right. Being mushy was contagious, but he was looking forward to the cure, very much.

The closet line was great, pure Fraser!
Just brilliant, an ideal way to start a Friday. And Fraser, neglecting your duty! Shame on you! *g*

Some nice gentle humour - loved the closet bit.
It gave me a lovely, warm glow.
