Catching buttons
The music ended and Fraser wasn’t entirely sure what he should do now. It had been simple, gentlemanly, to dance with Miss Burns, but now. Now he was holding the woman unsure of what to say or do. What should he say to her?
The magic of the music had for a moment allowed both of them to feel perhaps a touch of romance but it hadn’t been physical, just like the northern lights hadn’t been. It was a wonderful illusion but with the music gone Fraser found the illusion was broken.
She spoke first. “Well I should be getting back. It’s late and I have a lot to do. I have to cancel the wedding, the caterers, the band, the marquee; I have to write to everyone and tell them the wedding’s off.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I loved Nigel, I still do, but I told myself I wouldn’t get married to a man in jail. Or one that had tried to kill me so… this is the right thing.”
“You’ll find someone, I’m sure.”
“I’m sure I will,” she replied, looking wistful for a moment.
“Would you like me to escort you home?”
“No, thank you. One night in a dump truck with you was… it was enough.”
“At least let me walk you to the door.”
She took Fraser’s arm. “I’d like that, thank you.”
As they walked through the hallway Fraser wondered what he should say.
“You know you can take a chance sometimes you know,” she said.
Fraser was thoughtful. “Yes, I suppose I can.”
There was a cab waiting for her as she left. Fraser saw her safely there, opening the door for her to get in.
“Goodbye, Miss Burns.”
“Goodbye,” she paused awkwardly. “I don’t even know your name.”
“Fraser, Constable Benton Fraser.”
“Ah, well goodbye, Fraser.”
She waved as the cab pulled away.
Fraser turned around to see Ray standing waiting for him. They’d barely had any time to spend together this evening. It seemed they never just decided to take some time to themselves in the middle of a busy day or evening. Everything else came first even if it didn’t have to. He glanced down at his button. Take a chance, it said.
“She was nice,” Ray said with a hint of jealousy.
“Miss Burns? Yes she was,” Fraser glanced after the cab and caught Ray’s eye. “There was nothing between us, Ray,” Fraser said slightly nervously as hr chose to gaze at Ray.
“I know that.” Ray paused. “Benny, are you okay?”
“Yes, Ray, I’m fine. Would you like to come up to my office?”
“Sure.”
Fraser wasn’t entirely certain this was the best course of action. He tried so hard not to be reckless in love, but perhaps that had been a mistake. He hadn’t done anything for Ray. In shutting himself off completely he’d made their relationship boring. Ray never complained either. Earlier Ray had kissed him in his office as they got changed and he helped Ray out of the uniform. It had been a perfect opportunity to take things further and Fraser had let it lapse, even though he’d wanted it.
Then there was the fact that their dates tended to be interrupted by neighbours who needed help with unblocking their drains, or someone robbing a restaurant. Fraser distracted him with those tasks, if he was distracted he couldn’t lose himself in love. It wasn’t fair on Ray though.
He did owe Ray more and after talking to Miss Burns she’d made him realise sometimes he should tug at the loose thread. The button might stay on without any trouble. But even if the button fell off, he knew Ray would be there to catch it.
As soon as they entered his office, Fraser closed and locked the door. Ray seemed puzzled until Fraser came forward and kissed him.
It was so nice to hold Ray like this, in the confines of his office. He was kissing Ray, tasting him, smelling the cologne Ray had insisted would cover up the garbage smell. This wasn’t the illusion he’d had dancing with Miss Burns, this was a raw, basic love.
“Benny, I’m not complaining but…”
“We can talk later,” Fraser replied.
He eased Ray’s jacket from his shoulders, letting it fall to the floor in a heap. Ray might have protested, but whatever protest he might have made was lost as Fraser held Ray in place for a kiss that was enthusiastically returned. He gently manoeuvred Ray to rest on the desk.
He began to undo Ray’s shirt buttons. He was relieved to discover that Ray wasn’t wearing a vest underneath. This gave Fraser the opportunity to drop gentle kisses onto the exposed chest. He then realised Ray would have worn the jacket with nothing underneath the red serge on his bare skin. Fraser regretted wearing his Henley.
Ray held onto the edge of the desk and his white knuckles indicated he was trying his best to keep quiet. Fraser smiled as Ray’s self control gave away and he moaned before biting his lip to try not to be loud; they could still hear the last remaining guests downstairs.
Ray offered no resistance as Fraser undid his pants and they pooled around his ankles. Fraser didn’t waste any time in pulling Ray’s briefs down - an act that resulted in a slight yelp from Ray as the elastic caught.
Fraser was pleased to see that Ray was already quite erect and he wondered why he’d never tried this before. Excited himself, he took Ray into his mouth. Ray’s breathing was harsh and Fraser could feel he was holding back. Fraser placed his hands over Ray’s and stroked then gently as he sucked.
Ray came and Fraser didn’t let go. When the tremors were over Fraser let Ray’s now limp shaft go and slowly stood up.
Ray didn’t speak, but immediately started trying to undo Fraser’s jacket buttons. The sexual tension was broken by the fact he couldn’t undo them.
Ray sighed and stopped trying. “Benny, how do you do this? I mean, this is crazy.”
“What is?”
“These buttons, how can you undo them?” Ray pointed to the offending buttons.
Fraser stepped up to Ray and began to undo them. “Let me, Ray. It just takes practice.”
“Do they teach this in Mountie school?” Ray asked.
“Well, there was one sergeant who lined cadets up weekly and timed how long it took them to get in and out of their dress uniform,” Fraser replied taking perhaps a bit longer than he normally would undoing the buttons to savour this personal moment with Ray.
“You ever have to do that?”
“Quite a few times, yes. Although I was never the quickest.”
“Ah, come on, you?”
“Yes, me, Ray. My hand co-ordination was fine but I took a lot of care not to get the buttons snagged.”
“Well, I wasn’t and I still couldn’t undo them.”
As he got to the end of the buttons Fraser found he was having difficulty, perhaps he was still too distracted. He gave the last one a gentle tug and to his horror the button came off. He barely had time to blink before realising that Ray had caught it. Fraser smiled. Sometimes co-incidences made a lot of sense in intimate situations. He stifled a giggle.
Ray looked puzzled as he kept hold of the button, placing it on the desk. He said nothing but sighed at Fraser’s state of dress. “You’re wearing an undershirt.”
“Sorry, Ray.”
“Well, I guess the fact I couldn’t undo the buttons kind of killed the mood, huh?”
“Not entirely, Ray,” Fraser said with a glint in his eye. The buttons had made a very useful point indeed.
“Okay, Mr Mountie, get on that desk”
Fraser had to smile. He braced himself against the desk and Ray started to undo his pants.
Some time later they lay, rather cramped, on the floor of Fraser’s office holding each other and relaxing in each other’s company.
“What made you decide we should have sex in your office?” Ray asked. “Not that I’m complaining.”
“A button.”
“A button?”
“What, this button?” Ray asked picking up the button that had earlier fallen off.
“No, not that one, Ray – another one.” Fraser pointed to the button that had earlier had a loose thread but had stayed on. “Sometimes, Ray, you can pull the loose thread of a button and it won’t fall off.”
“So what, we’re a loose thread?”
“No, Ray, we’re the button.”
“So, we’re going to what? Stay sewed on?"
“Yes, Ray."
“How can you be sure we won’t fall off like this other button?” Ray asked admiring it.
“We have to take that chance, Ray. Anyway, you caught this button, didn’t you? And I’m there to catch yours.”
“Benny, that makes less sense than an Inuit story, but if we means we do that again I’ll listen to stories about us as buttons for hours. We will be doing that again, right?”
“Yes, Ray, I think we will be.”
“Oh good,” Ray replied, initiating the next kiss.
They were very late to bed that evening.
