I've had this open in a tab for however many days now because I misread the wordcount as 11,000, and I was saving it for a day when I had time to read longer fic. There are two distinct lessons in this: one, I have complete faith in your ability to write 11,000 words for a flashfic challenge, and two, I should do more than just skim headers, even if I do know the author. *g*
I love this. It feels like there are really four Rays here, two dualities of Ray in a given place/time. There's the Ray before the train who was prey for the gang, and the Ray after the train who was tacitly accepted via cigarette (heh); then there's the Ray before the bullet who was full of the potential for actions and words, and the Ray after the bullet who's been drained of all that potential.
For a minute there, I thought you were going to kill him off. Way to fool me. *g*
