The door to the apartment opened and Diefenbaker looked up and whined at the sight in front of him.

Ray Vecchio and Ray Kowalski, both looking upset and shaken, entered, supporting Fraser between them. Fraser was unsteady on his feet, and his head was wrapped in a bandage.

Diefenbaker whined again and hurried over to Fraser, sniffing him anxiously. “It’s okay, boy,” Fraser assured his wolf. “I’m fine.”

“Yeah, he’s great,” said Kowalski, his voice shaking and barely controlled. “He stopped a bullet with his head, but he’s just terrific.”

Fraser looked over at him in surprise. “Ray…”

Kowalski shook his head. “Don’t say anything right now, Fraser.”

Amazingly, Fraser kept quiet, and the two Rays led him into the bedroom and helped him get settled on the bed, leaning against the headboard with all the pillows behind him; then sat down next to him.

Fraser closed his eyes and sat quietly for a few minutes, then opened his eyes and looked at Kowalski. “Ray, are you upset?”

“Oh my God,” Kowalski said, and with a short, disbelieving laugh, he buried his face in his hands.

“Of course he’s upset, Benny!” Vecchio snapped. Fraser looked over at him in confusion, and it seemed to set Vecchio off even more. “How the hell do you think he’d feel? He saw that kid pull his gun, aim right at your head, and pull the trigger.

“And he saw you fall to the ground, and just lie there, okay? You were just lying there, not moving, on the dirty, stinky, disgusting ground in that alley, and your face was covered in blood, and you weren’t moving at all, and I thought-”

His voice had been steadily rising, until he was nearly shouting. He broke off and walked over to the window, punching the wall with his fist and staring outside, breathing heavily.

Kowalski jumped off the bed and hurried after him. He put his hands on Vecchio’s shoulders, squeezing gently. “It’s okay, Vecchio,” he whispered.

Ray shook his head and turned around, trying to move past him, but Kowalski blocked his way. “It’s okay,” he said again. He pulled Vecchio into an embrace, and suddenly they were kissing, hungrily, fiercely, desperately. After a minute Kowalski pulled away and leaned against Vecchio, resting his head on his shoulder, and Vecchio wrapped his arms around him.

“Yeah,” Vecchio whispered, placing a light kiss on Kowalski’s ear, “yeah, it’s okay.”

He glanced back over at the bed, and couldn’t help but laugh a little. Fraser was looking at them as if they were the ones with the head injury, or maybe his concussion was making him hallucinate.

Kowalski looked over too, and smiled, and the two Rays moved back over to the bed and sat down next to Fraser again.

Vecchio took a deep breath, then took Fraser’s hand in a gentle grip. “Benny,” he said, his voice now calm and controlled, “we were both very upset, all right? And we had every right to be. I thought- and I know Kowalski did, too- for a minute, for an eternity, I thought you were dead.”

Kowalski shivered and nodded in agreement, and Fraser’s eyes widened in surprise.

“I’m sorry,” Fraser said. “I had no idea. I… I suppose it could have looked that way. But I’m fine. You heard the doctors, just a graze, and a mild concussion. I’m going to be fine.”

“Yeah, this time,” Kowalski said. “But how many lucky breaks and near misses do you think you’re going to get, Fraser?”

“Well, I…” Fraser sighed and shook his head.

“Benny,” Vecchio said, squeezing his hand a little tighter, “we aren’t asking you to change who you are. Not really. But maybe you could slow down and think and be a little more cautious in the future.

“You don’t have to personally chase down every petty criminal in the entire city.”

Fraser’s eyes widened and he started to speak, but Vecchio cut him off. “Like next time you see a purse snatcher, instead of blindly running after him, you can let us call it in.”

“Yeah,” Kowalski said. “Or if you absolutely have to give chase, let me and Vecchio take the lead. You know, the guys who are actually armed?”

Fraser looked slowly between the two men, then nodded. “Okay. I’ll do my best.”

“Do better than your best,” Vecchio said.

Fraser looked at him, and Vecchio smiled. “We need you, Benny.”

“We’re a family. The three of us.” There was a growl from the door, and Vecchio grinned. “Sorry, Dief. The four of us. And you’re an important part of it. What would we do without you, Benny?

“And we don’t just need you as a buffer between me and Ray.”

Kowalski laughed quietly and nodded.

“We need you Benny. Your Inuit stories and your insane leaps of logic that always seem to work out, and your annoying, endearing habit of walking around singing in the morning. And a thousand other little and big things. We need you Benny.”

Kowalski started to speak, then stopped, cleared his throat and tried again. “I… um… what he said.”

Vecchio grinned. “You see Benny? I can’t go around having one-sided conversations for the rest of my life.”

“Screw you, Vecchio.” Kowalski shoved Vecchio’s shoulder, and Vecchio laughed.

Kowalski looked back at Fraser, and his expression softened. “I need you, Fraser. I love you.”

“I love you too, Ray.” He looked at Vecchio. “Ray.”

“Good,” Vecchio said, and leaned over and kissed Benny. When Fraser pulled away, he smiled at Kowalski, and Kowalski leaned over for his own kiss.

Fraser smiled and leaned back against the headboard with a sigh.

“You okay,” Kowalski asked anxiously, eyeing him carefully.

“I have a headache,” Fraser answered without opening his eyes.

Both Rays frowned in concern at the admission. “Okay, come here,” Kowalski said, pulling Fraser into his arms. He pulled the pillows from behind Fraser and placed them back in their usual places on the bed, then lay down on his side, Fraser resting against him.

He kept one arm wrapped around Fraser’s waist, and used his other hand to gently massage Fraser’s head.

Vecchio looked down at them for a minute, then with a big smile, lay down next to them, facing Fraser. He stroked Fraser’s face with one hand and Kowalski’s with the other, and they each let out a happy sigh.

Vecchio grinned. “Think you can get some rest now, Benny?”

Fraser leaned a little closer against Kowalski and wrapped his arms around Vecchio’s waist. “I’m sure of it,” he said.

Fraser fell asleep quickly, safely cocooned between his two Rays.
