This may be one of the more painful things I've read recently; the contrast of Fraser's detached monologue with the crazed activity of his life (marmosets included!) is almost frightening. I can't decide whether I think the last sentence is hopeful, or really depressing. Either way, I like it.
I'm intrigued by mikes_grrl's comment, since I found myself pretty firmly convinced that Fraser's power is all in his head: it seems so like him to mistake blind chance for Nemesis.
