What wonderful comments. I am so pleased you read between the lines and saw someone who's just not comfortable in his own skin. I figure Franklin made a move on Ray at some point, and either it just ended badly or it freaked Ray out, because he was being confronted with confusing feelings.
As for the inclusion of words like "faggot," I suspect those adding to the official record of any cop, whether he was actively homosexual or not, would carefully avoid putting that in print. I actually did imagine that Ray got into the fight with the other cops because of a reputation he'd gotten with Franklin.
Yea, verily, the backstory in my head is full and rich indeed. Now if only I could keep it all straight -- er, so to speak.
