I wouldn't necessarily say "better", but I love that series. It's one of the first DS things I ever read, even before I'd seen all of the episodes, so she really shaped my view of the canon.
Bone is someone whose writing I absolutely worship. I re-read at least one of her stories -- or one of her stories with Aristide -- weekly (Yesterday it was "How Ray....".) But so far it hasn't rubbed off. *G* Darn.
But don't be self-deprecating. This piece is really lovely. :) Can't wait to see what you do next.
