Hi! I've been a DUE SOUTH fan for awhile and though I've been writing fanfic for a long time, I've never really shared it with anyone but my friend Lauren (who I think is getting sick of me by now.) You have NO idea how excited I was to find a community like this online.
Anyhoo, I'm new to LiveJournal AND this community, so I'm kind of nervous about this. I tried to stick within the realm of the "Halloween" theme that we're supposed to be sticking to. Please give me your honest opinion of this story, but also please be gentle. I'm new!
Domino Effect
Ray sat across the desk, still in his skeleton costume. Fraser, meanwhile, had changed back into his serge.
"You know, most people think you're still in costume, Fraser," Ray said, grinning.
"Other's perceptions, Ray," Fraser said, pulling something out of his pocket, "are not my concern."
Ray glanced up at his friend, this man who, four hours ago, had once again saved his life. Fire instead of water this time, and still that old trick had worked.
Trick? Or treat?
"That, uh, breathing thing again, huh?" Fraser had laid the box - dominoes, for some reason - on the desk and began to shuffle them out. "That's always something."
"Just buddy breathing," Fraser said, not looking up from his dominoes.
"And if you'd just left me there?" Ray said, picking one up and looking at it quizzically. "If you'd gone after the Carpoli brothers instead of coming back for me?"
"Well, Ray," Fraser said, settling into his seat, "That's not buddies."
Ray looked across the desk and their eyes locked. That seemed to happen more and more these days, a casual glance turning into a little more. Ray wondered - deep in the parts of his heart that didn't often speak - what it meant.
"What's this?"
"Dominoes," Fraser responded, moving them into some unintelligible formation.
"Yeah, I can see that," Ray said, grinning. "But why?"
"Ever play?"
"Not really," Ray said, matching one of the dominoes with its twin. Matched set. That's always nice.
Fraser's hands moved rhythmically, and Ray simply sat and watched. Dominoes manipulated in those strong Mountie hands, arranging and rearranging themselves on the desk like intricate Chinese pictograms. Ray was captivated; by the dominoes, by the hands.
"So what about you, Fraser?" he finally asked. The Mountie looked up. Ray looked, too. Those eyes, penetrating, seeming to burrow into those dark places perhaps best left unearthed. Or…
"What about me, Ray?"
Ray indicated the dominoes with a nod of his head. "When did you learn to play?"
"Oh, I didn't," Fraser said, and was that a hint of a smirk.
"But!" Ray looked at him, eyebrows raised. Yep. It was a smirk. "If you're just putting them down on the table like that … I mean, if you don't know the rules of the game, then aren't you just messing around?"
The grin stayed. Fraser picked up his dominoes one by one and began standing them on their ends. After a few moments, they were laid in a straight line, one end at Fraser's side of the desk, the other at Ray's. The smirk never leaving his face, Fraser toppled the domino on his end, cascading the rest. The last fell a mere inch from Ray's folded hands.
"What do you think, Ray?" he asked, and the smirk became a smile.
~this is the end!~
