Packing It In

By

Sanguine

(261 words)

Someone was watching her, she was sure of it. Instincts, honed from living on the run, told her she was in danger.

She hurriedly packed, throwing clothing and toiletries in her small bag. She truly didn't want to leave, since it was snowing so hard, but she had no choice. She knew she had to run. Holding her coat shut with one hand, her bag clutched in the other, she ran out of the hotel room into the snow.

As she fumbled with her keys to open her car, a figure loomed up behind her. She gasped and dropped her bag. A man with dark eyes grabbed for her. She left the bag lying there and ran. Another man stepped in front of her. She stopped, glanced back at the man following her and tried to duck around the man in front of her. He grinned and grabbed her arm so tightly she cried out. "Who are you?" Victoria Metcalf demanded, her long hair flying around her face as she struggled with him.

He didn't answer her question, but as he dragged her to a waiting car, he grinned again, cruelly, and said, "We've been looking for you. Armando Langoustini wants to see you."

She didn't know anyone named Armando Langoustini, but somehow she was afraid. She'd thought she lost the ability to be afraid years ago.

When she saw the brilliant green eyes of the man who was called Armando now, she knew she was doomed, that he would extract his promise.

He would see her dead for hurting Ben.
