"I've been doing a lot of thinking lately. About us," Stella said.
And "I don't know why it took me so long. I could never love anyone like I love you."
And "This whole thing's just been a big mistake. I think we should try again -- we could make it work."
And "What do you say, Ray? Can we give it another shot?"
She said all of it, every single word Ray had been imagining all this time in all his self-indulgent fantasies. And then she kissed him and he kissed her back and they climbed into bed and it was all good, it was great, like a dream, like a miracle, like everything he had ever wanted back in his arms.
And if it felt a little weird, a little different, a little like maybe he'd changed from that guy -- well, that didn't matter anymore, did it?
