Guardian Angel

You may not believe there are guardian angels but, believe me, we exist. How else could you explain all the things you call miracles, like surviving a plane crash or a fire?
It’s us!
At the moment I’m protecting a man serving in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I can tell you I haven’t slept one minute since I got this job. This guy continuously jumps out of windows, licks things he finds on the ground and faces armed bad guys and all he has for protection is me, a knife that is mostly useless and his wolf, Diefenbaker.
Sometimes I’m really glad he’s got that wolf otherwise I would have quit a long time ago and no one else around here is willing to keep an eye on him.
There was a time when he didn’t give me any problems (just a few frostbites, I can’t really do anything about) but then he came to Chicago and the danger around him just doubled. No, make that – tripled.
He calls it “reflex” or “instinct”, but it’s me who keeps him alive. And I’m not just protecting him from danger that could get him killed. No, there are people around who can hurt his heart. I’m the one that tells him when to run and how fast.
Sometimes I just forget to tell him to run and he just freezes, for example, when he is in front of this civilian aid chick, Francesca. All he can do is babble politely, yet he gets away with it. So, some things he can manage himself and you have to admit even an angel needs time to rest.
You know, I love this man. I really do. He has such a good heart and he believes that one man can make a difference. But sometimes I think he is just stupid or stubborn or whatever - like now. We – I mean he - his wolf and his new partner are in a middle of a fight that wasn’t really necessary in the first place.
I call out, “Look!” and he sees the guy coming from behind.
I call out, “Duck!” and the fist doesn’t hit him, at least not that hard – I’m a little distracted by Ray because I can’t see his angel but he has a gun anyway.
I call out “Jump!” and he is safe and sound on the ground.
I call “Take cover!” and he is behind a car so the bullet doesn’t reach him.
I call out “Grab Ray!” and he grabs his partner to protect him as well.
I’m sweating (yes, angels sweat) when the cavalry finally arrives and my guy is safe, at least for the moment because I can see Ray’s face and he is ready to kick him in the head as he is always saying.
“Stupid, Fraser”, he screams right in his face, poking his chest. “Stupid, just stupid.”
“Ray…”
“Do not argue with me!”
“Understood.”
I decide not to interfere because I love these little moments between the two of them. It’s a real pleasure to watch when Ray’s energy meets Fraser’s calm. Priceless.
It’s a pity I am not the angel of love here but where is one when you really need one?
The least I can do is tell him not to run, and hopefully he won’t.
The End
Thank you
