A response to [livejournal.com profile] butterfly's post

I was moved by the excellent Frannie piece by [livejournal.com profile] butterfly, the lovely "Now and Then" two posts before this one. So moved, I wrote a response. Which does have a make-up and making-things-up connection, however slight. It made me think of Fraser and this is what came out of it.

Perhaps today will be the day, Fraser thinks, as he notices Francesca across the bull pen. Sees the affection in her smile, the genuine warmth in her eyes, and feels his chest tighten with fear.

He knows what she wants from him, what he can’t give.

He wishes circumstances were different.

He knows what will happen. She will approach him, she will smile. She will brush her small hand over his forearm. Her smile will be quite fetching, really. And still he will do nothing.

Perhaps today will be different.

He might blush, though he hopes he won’t. He might stammer, though he prays his grasp of the English language is strong enough to lead him across this treacherous terrain.

He will both pity and admire her, for she is still able to do that which he cannot. Though he wishes she will not continue to misinterpret his inaction.

He will glance at Ray and he will not sigh. He will not act, for he knows what he is capable of and what he is not. He understands his failures.

He knows she tries for him. The long lashes of her deep-set eyes. The pink of her lips. He knows he lets her down, as he steels himself to his control.

She is lovely, though.

Perhaps today she’ll understand.

What a wonderful counter-point. This was very nicely done!

I think it worked very well. Poor Frannie, poor Fraser...

Oh, it does work. In fact, I started musing that possibly EVERYONE at the startion could be thinking the same thing -- is today the day he/she will approach me? Will I have the nerve to talk to him/her about what I feel? Really, you could do a whole series. This is very nice, and, considering the original piece, very touching.

I can hear Ray in the background: "Ooh! Do me! Do me!"
So I think you should!

Yes! Yes, yes, yes. It's MAGGIE who's the right Mountie for Frannie. Maggie all the way!

Oh, wow. I love this. It's simply wonderful and wonderfully complicated.
