It's a little clumsy, but I was trying to show that Vecchio's there more out of a sense of duty, and Kowalski's there out of love. They both have very different character motivations (well, they would, had I written it more clearly), and ultimately, it's RayK who'll stay with Fraser while Vecchio moves on.
