For the Dief/Dog's Life Challenge. 995 words. Gen. My debut fic, no beta. Thanks. *bows*

"Hey, Dief-buddy, where's your human?" Ray asked, slipping into Fraser's office and closing the door behind him. He could hear the Ice Queen giving Turnbull hell for the flowerpot. Diefenbacher was sitting in front of the door, as if he'd been waiting for Ray to show up. He barked a greeting. "He's not hiding in the closet, is he? Because I'm afraid of what I'm going to find when I open the door one of these times." He winked at Dief, as if the wolf was in on the in-joke. He got a lick that might have meant amusement.

He walked to the closet door, wiping wolf-spit off his face with his sleeve. The knob turned easily and he had it partly open when Dief nudged against his legs, forcing him to step into the black hole that was Fraser's closet.

"Hey, that's not buddies," Ray chided, stepping back as he pushed the door so it'd open all the way. Hangers, clothes, coat, rod, back wall, no Fraser. "So, okay, he's not here." Dief nudged him again. "What? He's not here and it's not like there's a hidden door here or something." Ray considered what he'd just said, thought about Fraser and the bizarre stuff that he found, or that found him, and then turned back to the closet to see if there was a hidden lever that would open into a secret passage to an underground lair of some psycho who had kidnapped Fraser and from who- whom Fraser now needed rescuing.

There was nothing, or nothing Ray could find, except for a cold draft that seemed to come from nowhere. He stepped back into Fraser's office and gave the wolf an irritated look. "You've got me thinking nutty things. Is this why he spends so much time in the closet? You tell him the secrets of the world are in there somewhere and he believes you?"

Dief growled at him in what--Jesus, he was reading things into the wolf's growls now--might have been a scolding way.

"Come on, Dief. Help me find Fraser, okay? You lead the way and I'll follow. So go." Dief stood up, sat back down, and whined at him a little. "What? You want a sock or something to sniff? You can't follow a trail from here to the front door?"

Dief barked at him.

"Come on, I-" Ray caught himself as he was on the verge of apologizing to the wolf for insulting him. "I am -not- talking you, wolf. And that's that. Just play like you're a good dog and fetch my partner, okay?"

A snarl.

"Okay, okay. I'm sorry, okay?" He knew he could just leave. He didn't have to put up with the mouthy half-wolf while Fraser was out. "Just see if I let you lick my ear again." Dief whined and Ray grinned, feeling victorious. "Yeah, see how you like it."

His victory was short-lived, however, since he still didn't have the Mountie and the wolf was staring at him. Impatiently.

"Fine, we'll do it your way." Whatever way that was.

Diefenbaker finally got back up and walked casually to the door, like it was his idea in the first place.

"Yeah, yeah." Ray opened the door and then followed the wolf out, leaving the door ajar behind him. Arguing with the wolf was like arguing with Fraser. He was never going to win.

They left the consulate and turned left on the sidewalk outside the gate. Ray looked around, trying to spot clues, hoping for some kind of hunch. He got nothing. Well, he got barked at when he tried to cross the street at the intersection. Diefenbaker shot him a pointed look and turned down the sidewalk.

There was a difference, at least. Fraser would have turned and just expected Ray to figure it out on his own. Sad, that the wolf had less faith in him than Fraser. "Hey, I can follow directions, you know."

As if to test that, Dief stopped beside the alley that cut across that block and barked. Ray looked at the alley, at Dief, at the sidewalk in front, and turned. Dief growled.

"What, what?" Ray demanded, swinging around and throwing his arms up. "Do not turn? Go straight, is that what you want?" He stalked past the wolf and continued down the sidewalk. A moment later, Dief trotted up beside him with a whine. "Yeah, yeah. I obviously don't understand wolf. Wanna try some of that Inuit stuff? Maybe I'll get that better than your wolf-american."

Dief yipped.

Ray rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I'll stop the sarcasm. You could take a lesson from Fraser and just give it back, you know." Dief growled. "Yeah. True."

Turn again at the corner, turn again at the other corner. City blocks were hell on the feet. Still no sign of Fraser. They reached the alley where they would have come out if they'd ducked in at the other end, and Dief yipped.

"Why now?" Ray demanded. Dief growled. "Yeah, I get it. Damn it." He turned down the alley. Dief let him go in the lead, barking occassionally. At the end of the alley, they turned back to the right. Another right, turn right back into the consulate. "Thanks for taking me for a walk, Dief," Ray muttered. Dief raced ahead of him into Fraser's office. When Ray stepped in, Fraser was stepping out of his closet. The Mountie stopped, looking at like Bambi caught in the spotlights. "Fraser, buddy, we have to talk."

"About what, Ray?" Fraser asked, all innocence.

The draft Ray had noticed earlier had crept into the room. Ray crossed his arms and gave Fraser a hard look. "Let's start off with the fact that the wolf does not always agree with you."

"Well, I know that, Ray."

Dief barked.

"Exactly," Ray said, nodded in conviction. "Let's start with that." The look on Fraser's face was a combination of terror and shock. Ray grinned.

::snerks brandy out nose::

Well done you! Funny and wryly sweet and bang on.

"Yeah, yeah. I obviously don't understand wolf. Wanna try some of that Inuit stuff? Maybe I'll get that better than your wolf-american."

So Dief's fluent in Luponics?

::welcomes you to the fandom while ducking to avoid the rotten tomatoes::

Hey -

Tried to respond to your response (!) to this, but it's error-locked...

Weirdly - and entertainingly - I got into dS almost exactly the same way - via Sentinel to Ces and Resonant, and through their dS to lots of other stuff, and yes yes yes CKR HOT!

Parallel lives. Cool.

Great!

God, this is SO Ray! And arguiung with the wolf will get him nowhere!

At the end of the alley, they turned back to the right. Another right, turn right back into the consulate. "Thanks for taking me for a walk, Dief," Ray muttered.

::grins::
