Okay, I'm kind of clearing off my plate today as far as writing is concerned. I'm not totally happy with this, and it has not seen the eyes of a beta, for I have none in this fandom. But still I figured if I didn't post it now, I never would.

Ray Kowalski loves the serge. Which is weird, really, because to be honest, it should look kinda goofy. The red, the buttons, the hat. Really, when he thinks about it in separate parts, it's laughable and not all the different from Stella's high school marching band outfit. And that uniform had been many things, but hot was not one of them. But put the serge all together, and it's hot, and not just on Fraser either. Maybe it's the leather. Stella's marching band uniform never had leather.

That being said, he also loves when Fraser doesn't wear the uniform. Fraser's like, the King of Practicality or something, so when he picks out certain things to wear it's for a reason, like to stay warm, or for ease of movement. Stella never wore anything because it was practical. With her it was always about image, how the outfit made her look, what impression it gave off, what the outfit was 'telling other people'. Unless Fraser's wearing the serge, he never really seems concerned with what his outfit is saying, it's all about necessity.

The flannel, jeans, and boots combination is hot. Cause with Fraser he looks like he's going to do something outdoorsy. Like maybe he's gonna go shoot a moose for dinner or go chop wood. And when Ray thinks about it, that's kind of exotic in a way. How many people did he know growing up that actually chopped their own wood? It's really kinda sexy.

But what Ray really loves the most is when Fraser wears sweaters. And the best part, the absolute best part, is that when Fraser wears sweaters, Ray can usually see his neck. See, the serge and the flannel both have collars that obscure Ray's view, especially of the back of the neck, which is Ray's favorite part. But with sweaters it's just all out there in the open, free for the looking.

Which isn't to say Ray doesn't look all those other times. Nah, plenty of times at the station Fraser would be leaning over something and Ray would glance down the back of the serge. But in his mind he kind of equated it with looking down a chick's shirt. Not that he compares Fraser to chicks or anything, it's just that looking down a chick's shirt is kind of a violation. Which doesn't really keep him from peeking down a woman's blouse or glancing down the back of Fraser's uniform, but he usually has the decency to feel guilty about it afterwards.

With the sweaters though, as nice as the view is at first, it's almost always too much of a good thing. By the end of the day Ray's taking for granted the fact that he can stare and the smooth white expanse of Fraser's neck unimpeded by cloth or guilt.

This is why Ray loves The Sweater.

Since Fraser dresses for practicality, his casual clothes tend to be the exact opposite of the serge. There's not a scuffed button or loose thread to be found on The Uniform, but Fraser's personal wardrobe is well worn. If there is nothing wrong with it, why throw it away just because it's showing a little wear? That's just wasteful.

The Sweater certainly has seen better days. To be honest, Ray probably couldn't tell anyone much of anything about the actual sweater itself - hell, he's not even positive he knows what color it is. But the neck of The Sweater, he could publish reference books on that piece of knitting. It's kind of a mock turtle neck, worn and frayed around the top. But the best part, the part that distinguishes The Sweater from the ranks of its fellow garments, is the tear.

Right there in the back of the collar is a tear, maybe an inch long. Just the right size to go the whole length of the neck to where it joins with the rest of the sweater. It's through this small rip that Ray can catch glimpses of Fraser's nape. And it's totally legal to look too, it's right there, he doesn't have to strain or be covert or anything.

And the difference between Fraser's neck in a low collar sweater and Fraser's neck in The Sweater is kind of like the difference between a naked chick and a chick in sexy underwear. Sure, the naked chick is great, Ray's all for naked chicks, but the sexy underwear always seems a little more dangerous, a little more scandalous, leaves a little more to the imagination.

Not that Ray thinks of Fraser's neck like porn or anything. Cause he doesn't. Really.

And one day, he tells himself, he's just going to lean over and run his finger (or hell, maybe his tongue) down Fraser's neck, through that rip.

And maybe, if Ray's really lucky, Fraser'll let him give them a reason to be thankful for high collars.

I love Fraser (an PG for that matter) in a sweater. I can totally understand why Ray feels the same *g*

Great!

Don't we all look at Fraser's clothes like Ray does?!

Go for it, Ray!
