I went flipping through my folder of challenges and stopped on this one, because it made me grin: The Mute Fraser Challenge. The idea of this (which seems to have come out of a DS chat) is that Fraser loses his voice for part or all of the story. This, I would say, is the important part--what happens with Fraser having no voice? what things become possible?--but it seems like the chat log was mostly about how or why Fraser would have gone mute in the first place (which I'll reproduce because it's amusing but stick it behind the cut tag, in case you don't want to have your own ideas clouded by someone else's.)

LauraKaye: maybe he screamed himself hoarse at a hockey game
Terri: Or while watching curling?
LauraKaye: sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.................. ::cough::
Mia: or having sex
LauraKaye: dude, that's really LONG sex
LauraKaye: it takes a while to scream your voice away
Mia: have you seen him chasing perps!
Terri: Or really loud yelling!
Mia: he has stamina!
LauraKaye: (says the girl whose family considers football a minor sacrament)
Terri: Or... maybe he ate something that made his vocal cords swell all up.
Mia_writin: maybe he's suddenly allergic to Dief
Terri: (But didn't kill him. That bit is important.)
Terri: (Although he could be dead *and* mute. Unlike Bob.)
LauraKaye: dead AND mute is too angsty
Mia_writin: he could be faking it
Terri: Maybe he's suddenly allergic to the *uniform*. (gasp!)
LauraKaye: Oooh.
Cesca: maybe he tried to talk in a nightclub
LauraKaye: he COULD be faking it
Cesca: or at a concert
LauraKaye: like when Hutch faked having amnesia
Terri: Maybe Ray (whichever one) told Fraser to shut up and some wish-granting fairy granted his wish!
Terri: And it's all, like, be careful what you wish for!
Terri: Maybe (eep) someone tried to strangle him.
Terri: Maybe (double-eep!) *Ray* (whichever one) tried to strangle him!

Anyway, you have two weeks to shut Fraser up. Challenge responses are due Saturday, February 26h at midnight.

*giggles*

That's the cutest thing I've ever read.

hey, i was wondering.

do you think another challenge, running along with the flashfiction challenge, would work? i was thinking maybe of a NONflashfiction challenge, where the story has to be at least 3000 words. (or whatever)

obviously, it would have to be longer than 2 weeks, but every time the flash challenge ended, you could say 'and don't forget the non flash caribou story challenge, due june 1' or what have you.

just to get some longer stories

I second doll's idea, above. Only because I've never written anything longer than 1200 words. And nothing longer than a drabble in dS. And I'd love the challenge to write a longer one for a challenge.
