Title: An unlikely angel
Author: Lakester
Rating: PG
Summary: I guess dying in the line of duty has its upsides.
Ray didn't remember getting shot. He didn't even remember dying and you'd think that would make an impression on a guy. Not to mention that this room with 'Processing centre' engraved on the door, looked a lot more like a doctor's waiting room than heaven or hell.
He clutched at the file the receptionist had handed him. She'd babbled on about how 'we at H&H Inc are branching out into near-death experiences. If you'd care to wait in here, sir.' He'd already tried to open it but the pages kept sticking.
The door blew open and a guy with a bad suit and worse moustache breezed in. He lifted the file out of Ray's hands, checked the name on the file with a list on the clipboard he was carrying and nodded.
He opened the file and Ray's world went momentarily black before flickering back into life.
He blinked a few times, unsure of what he was seeing. He wasn't even into that 'It's a wonderful life' deal. He'd seen the movie, but he'd bet there were lost tribes in the middle of Amazon rainforest who'd seen that movie. 'Sides if there was any freaky-deaky hallucinations going on, stands to reason they'd land on Fraser -he just had that vibe.
Still it appeared that the psychic phenomena had zigged when it should have zagged 'cause he was right here outside the 2-7 ankle-deep in snow not listening to the guy in a cheap suit rattle on. Something about last chances and loved ones and 'are you listening Kowalski, you dumb Polack?'.
"Huh?"
"Listen, I don't like this anymore than you so let's get this over with so I can get back to a couple of very sweet angels."
The angel was leering. Although Ray had missed church more than he'd hit it, he was sure that hot angelic threesomes had never figured- it would definitely have made an impression.
"Aren't you meant to be all, you know, angelic?"
"Okay, so I'm not Saint Peter, but who do you think you are, kid, Jimmy Stewart? Now I'm on a schedule, so you only get one intervention. I've got a list here somewhere."
Flicking through the papers on his clipboard he finally looked up. "So what'll it be? I've got friends, enemies, family and current events."
"Current events?"
"Yeah you know, how your life would have turned out if the Kennedy assassination never happened - that one's one of our more popular lines."
Ray shook his head. "So you gonna change the world, just for me? I don't buy it. This has gotta be a set-up."
"Stanley Raymond Kowalski, despite what you may believe the world is not out to get you. Now this is a one-time offer. Take it or leave it."
"No way. I am who I am 'cause of my past. And I like my life." He touched his gunshot wound carefully. "It might involve hangliding off tall buildings or shootouts with Smurfs more often than I'd expected, but... no."
"Your loss," the angel shrugged and the file and clipboard disappeared in a cloud of sparkles. "Back to heaven early, I guess."
Ray headed for the bright lights of the precinct. He was almost there when he heard the angel shout. "You know Jack Huey, right?"
Ray turned and nodded.
"Tell him Louis said hi, and I'll see him upstairs next week."
"Lewis?" Ray yelled at the fading figure.
He'd already disappeared by the time Ray heard an irritated echo through his head. "Louis, not Lewis!"
