Well, what if we dropped a Vulcan into Chicago and had Ray and Fraser playing bodyguards, sort of -- to start with anyway -- and told it from one of the boys' POV, like it's just another highly bizarre case? Reason I was asking is because I wasn't sure if it was the dS characters that had to be doing the fucking or dying.

We tend to interpret challenges broadly around here. It's your call about who fucks or dies; it doesn't have to be a DS character. Could be somebody's cat, for that matter!

Fuck or die is actually an established genre and is bigger than "aliens made them do it." So, for instance, you've got your classic "criminal intends to stage humilation" scenario where they have to fuck at gunpoint. Or someone has to do an intitiation rite to get into the criminal underworld--a rape, act in porn, etc. There's all sorts of pressure, and only SOME are aliens! *g* So have fun!

Also (and this may be neither the time nor place, but I can't think of a better place, so hopefully nobody will mind) I have never seen Due South- I got into it through fanfiction that just sounded too good not to read (Speranza's, of course). I really REALLY want to see the show, and I've looked through Amazon, but most everyone there comments that while the show is awesome, the dvds suck. So any advice on where/how to buy/get to see Due South would be greatly appreciated. I'd prefer not too expensive or complicated but good quality is most important. I hope you don't mind me semi-spamming the comments (but I'm getting kinda desperate;)

The new set of DVDs is actually pretty good, and much cheaper than the old set. Check Best Buy - one season is $20 and one season is $17, I think.

Is, quite frankly, terrified.

Can I suggest a bad sex challenge? There are many things about having sex which are awkward and uncomfortable, or even downright embarrassing, and it's not always fireworks exploding, "ribbons of come blossoming between them" wonderful. I think dealing with it not being that great is a challenge too.

Heee--no thumping, and you're right that the word limit is deliberately vague!

Technically, there is a word limit of 1,000 words, and the reason that this "formal" rule exists is because we really don't want people thinking that they have to post these big monster stories--we want to be clear that we welcome drabbles and really *flash* fiction and all sorts of things! We want you to play and have fun here!

In practice, however, we formally DO NOT ENFORCE the word limit, because hell, are we going to stop you if you're on a roll? No, WE ARE NOT! We want your long story too, if you've got it--hell, we want it all!

So we have a word limit that we honor by the ignoring of it, if that makes sense--a rule that we hope you will break. So submit a story of any length you want--the only "real" rules are a) no crossposting until after the challenge formally closes--i.e. the story has to be posted here and only here and b) that it must fulfill the terms of the challenge.

Hello, I am a grateful newbie with many questions...So, first, thank you very much for ds_flashfiction, and thanks to everyone for their wonderful stories. On to questions: Who can issue challenges? How often are they issued? Where do you all get your fabulous Paul/Callum/David McCallum (etc.) comment lead-in photos (emoticons?)? Is anyone else out there working on extra-long (novel-length) "due South" fiction? I don't know if this is feasible for me since I don't have my own computer, but...how can I volunteer to beta? (That's...proofread, right?) Thanks in advance to anyone who might respond - and please bear in mind, I may not be able to write you back for a week or ten days - I only have access through my local library.

Hey there newbie and welcome! Roughly in order:

1) You're welcome for DS_Flashfiction--glad you're enjoying!

2) Challenges can be suggested in the comments of Admin posts; I keep a list of the suggestions and decide what challenges to issue when.

3) There's a new challenge ever two weeks.

4) I assume you're talking about mood themes; people make them, and sometimes they offer to share them. I'd keep my eye on ds_noticeboard where those kinds of announcements are made.

5) Re: betaing--betaing can be mere proofreading but is usually something much more intensive that deals with writing, characterization, plot, etc. Some betas are effectively collaborators. People sometimes post their need of a beta at DS_Noticeboard, and I suppose there's nothing to stop you from advertising your services there if you'd like!

I went through the memories and haven't found anything like this, so I think here's a possible challenge.

Due South has a great supporting cast, but also a lot of cool recurring characters and guests. I'd love to see a challenge about them or their POV:
What's Greta Garbo up to these days? Did the Eggman's chickens win prizes (cue Fraser and Ray and Dief and wacky hijinks at the poultry fair)? What about those thankful tribal elders that have been calling up North? Does Nero the buttermilk-serving butler work for the Zuko's now? Is Bob satisfied with his after-after-life? Did the Mounties on the Bounty have a mutiny or other disclipinary issues? Did Stanley Kowalsky sleep in one of Orsini's cars? What about the day Ray's turtle was kidnapped by Zoltan Motherwell? What did that fowl-savvy desk sergeant stumble upon in the closet? (okay, that one might be an easy one *g*) -- I'll just. Stop. Here.

And, just in case, I'll mention that this would be a perfect opportunity to bring back Ian McDonald. Ian McDonald!!! Which was my original inspiration, but I didn't think an "Ian McDonald challenge" would be accepted. =D
