Incidentally, what got me thinking about the topic was the exchange in "Dr. Longball" between Welsh and Fraser, when Welsh asks what Fraser would do if he wanted to forgive someone but couldn't. And Fraser says, "I'd keep trying."

So it has actual canon provenance!

I'd like to suggest a challenge, too: about the characters that are not part of the regular cast. DS has a lot of cool recurring or one-time guests - could be interesting to see a challenge about them or their POV.

Think Greta Garbo, the Eggman, Stanley Smith, all those tribal elders calling up North to thank Fraser's superiors, the desk sergeant, Frank Zuko, Ray's turtle, Nero... Not to forget Ian McDonald, the starman who knew too little, who is original DS crack, I think. (Actually, I got this idea when looking for fic with Ian McDonald and couldn't find any. =)

Obviously it's not my call, but I'd totally cooperate with that. For the minor characters I know, which some of them I don't yet.

If you haven't yet - you absolutely should get your hands on "The Man Who Knew Too Little" (s1) and "The Starman" (s2)! These are a great couple of eps, I think Ian McDonald may be one of my favourite guest characters of all time and shows. Plus, it would seem I'm not alone with the Ian-love considering they brought him back in season 2. =)

I know of exactly one Ian McDonald fic (sorry can't do title and place) and that only stuck in my head because it was Ian/Mort. Draw your own conclusions.

I could *swear* there is Ian/RayV slash somewhere because when I first read it I guess I hadn't seen the episodes or couldn't remember who Ian was...

Hey! I just wanted you to know that this is totally on the list; it's been suggested a couple of times, and the reason that I haven't put it forth yet is that it strikes me that we've got a lot of new people in the fandom (I saw all that episode swapping going down!) and I wanted to give people a chance to watch the episodes, because if you don't know your canon well, you get left out of something like this.

So we will TOTALLY do this, very soon!

Yes, I agree. It relies on knowledge of canon much more than other challenges. Maybe you could announce it some six weeks or so beforehand, so people have a better chance at (re)watching eps?

I'd like to see a childhood challenge. Having kids, investigating kids, acting like kids, back in the 60s and 70s when the boys (and girls) actually were kids... any story prominently featuring a prepubescent or two.

I'd promise to even write for it!

Hmm. Slightly different from the above suggestion about the very minor characters, but how about a specific character challenge. Like, a Vecchio challenge or a Frannie challenge.

Just as a suggestion for one day. (Because apparently people really *want* Frannie fic, which I think is very good indeed!!)

Ooo, I have a challenge idea I'd *love* to see - courting! Ray courting Fraser, Dief courting Ray's turtle, Turnbull attempting to court Frannie, young Ray courting Stella, Fraser explaining the courting habits of penguins, and so on. I have a serious weakness for that part of a relationship, and I'd adore seeing what all the wonderful writers of this community could come up with.
