Am I on time?
May. 7th, 2003 12:10 amI was at work, so can I have a bit of a fudge time on the deadline? It's just a little bit past midnight in my time zone... Pleeeeeeeease??
Thank you to Linda for the title, this was written in, um, 20 minutes after I got home from the bookstore (where I got the bunny. I was shelving a lot of self-help today :) It's a dual-drabble. Each clocking in at exactly 100 words.
This isn't your Father's Mother Goose

When he was 14 years old, Stanley Raymond Kowalski kissed his princess, Stella Marie Daeley, underneath the oak tree behind her parents' house. Three years later, as he slipped his class ring over her finger, he vowed he would marry her. Four years to the day later, he promised her forever.
But fairy tales don't always hold up in the real world, and the poor boy doesn't always get to keep the princess.
Twenty years after that first fateful kiss, Ray and Stella shared one last kiss, burying their wedding rings underneath the old oak tree before walking away. Apart.

When he was 35 years old, Ray Kowalski wrapped his arms around Benton Fraser's shoulders and called him partner. In the cold of a crypt, Fraser answered with an oath of friendship. Two years later, by the light of the fire, Benton Fraser promised Ray forever, if he would have him. Two minutes later, the duet shared their first kiss.
Fairy tales might not be forever, but wolves mate for life. And a duet doesn't function in the singular.
Half a century and a hundred adventures later, upon the mountain where they'd started forever - they walked into the sky. Together.

From fairy tale back to (older) fable. Very nice.

Date: 2003-05-07 11:31 pm (UTC)I tend to see Ray and Stella as being a fairy tale/storybook love -- the poor boy wins the rich girl, then reality steps in and it's not happily ever after. Whereas with Ray and Fraser, it's definitely more 'real', primal/natural and, well, more likely to stick it out until the end (and beyond).

Date: 2003-05-07 07:24 am (UTC)I really like this line, and how true is this? You made me sniffly. At work. Where people are now giving me strange looks. But that's okay because this was lovely. (g)

Date: 2003-05-07 11:44 pm (UTC)It's never too late (I'm so behind on the congrats and commenting on the wonderful fics, it's not even funny)
(It's not my fault I have to go to bed early, now is it?).
Nope. Oh, I hope you were out of the line of the storms, I heard from an old college pal in Ames and they said they had some really powerful winds, etc....
Beautiful. You managed to fit a lot into 200 words. Got me all teary-eyed there towards the end-I'm a closet romantic.
Thank you! I'm a total die-hard romantic, so of course the boys have a happy ending :)
And gosh, I really never thought I'd make so many people sniffly. Heh.

Date: 2003-05-07 05:26 pm (UTC)I loved this line. Heck, I loved the entire piece. It's sort of a sad kind of happy ending, but definitely in a good way.

That was sooo beautiful. I'm all teary-eyed now. Wich is surprising in itself but that you accomplished it with only 200 words is fantastic. *G*
PS: "The Penguin Isn't Sorry Either". *giggles* :-)
