Summary: A new kid in the neighborhood is going to have a heavy influence and impact on young RayKs live.

Rating: Mild

Genre: AU - Oh, and I have twisted a little on the universal clock. Now RayK and Ben are the same age.

Note: The wonderful and patient Tora Kowalski was so kind to not only beta but also gloss it up for me. So, here is the repost and you will see what a difference my skilled Beta had made for the story, *hugs Tora dearly* since English isn't my native language. Thank you again. :-)

The new kid in town

1967: Chicago
St. Ignatius elementary school
Third period

"So, boys and girls, sit down. Sit down and be quiet. Today we are welcoming a new classmate of yours." She smiled down to a lanky boy to her left side. He was locking at the class nervously. Like he had never seen so many kids in one place.

He was average high for his age of 6 years and had short hair in the color of bitter chocolate and eyes big with awe and deep blue.
Currently he was only cute, but later he would have to use a stick to keep the girls at a distance.
"His name is Ben Fraser and he has just moved to Chicago.
Be kind to him, children, he used to live in a small village and you may have to show him one ore two things that make Chicago so special."
The school year was quite new - it was only autumn - and the rest of the kids hadn't formed strong bonds yet. He wasn't too late to make an easy start with the others. Hopefully they wouldn't pick on him for his Canadian accent.
Quickly, Ben made his way to a free table in the middle of the class.
"So, then let's start the lesson. Today we look at the leafs I asked you to collect and we will try to find out what trees they are from."

Slowly, the new boy began to relax. So far everything was going ok. If he was lucky they would maybe like him.

In the recess most of the children ran quickly to the toy closet where a teacher would give balls and hulahups and skipping rope out.
Ben didn't really know what to do with himself so he just stood at the side and looked at a group of boys from his class who where playing Kickball.
Then a scrawny blond with thick glasses addressed him.
"Hey, new boy. Ben right? We’re one short. Do you wanna play with us?"
"Sure, I would love to."
Ben smiled and Stan - he introduced himself with the others - told him after a quick smile back, in which team he was in.
Shortly after that Ben got his first game of Kickball in his life with more than just two other children.

Time went by and over many lunch brakes on the long tables they chatted about their families, what they would do on the next weekend and so on.
Stan and Ben soon became real tight buddies and sometimes he went home with Stan after school. They played in the backyard and Mrs. Kowalski was happy that her son had found such a sprightly and polite boy as a friend.
Her older son Brando brought such unpleasant brats home with him sometimes that she was worried about this acquaintance.
They did him no good at all.

Ben on the other hand was a delight to every mother. Barbara Kowalski would love to meet Mrs. Fraser more often but short of telephone calls if she would be late from work to pick her son up they hadn't much contact.
What she did know about the Fraser family was tragic. Caroline Fraser was married to a Mountie in Canada but he was sometimes away for months. It was hard enough to raise a little boy alone without help above the tree line but then there was an event which served as a wake up call.
A friend of her husband who had secretly poached behind Mr. Fraser’s back came to their cabin when the Mountie was on patrol and in a argument he shot her.
The shot luckily didn’t kill her but she fell into a brief coma.
Mr. Fraser set out to hunt the attempted murderer down but he forgot his son over it, in his rage over the betrayal of he man who he had called a friend.
Ben got to the priest of the village, since none of his parents was there or able to care for him.
A month later Caroline woke up again and the realizing that hunting for the criminal was more important to her husband than his own son was a epiphany for her. And it was the deathblow for their already frail marriage.
She left him and took her son back to her own parents who lived here in Chicago.
A totally new start for both of them. Her and Ben.

Mrs. Kowalski shook off the thoughts and called for the boys to come in and drink a hot chocolate with marshmellows. And also do their homework. It wasn't much, they were still little boys, but it had to be done.

They sat down a little later at the kitchen table in the comfy warm room - they had to wash their hands and change the trousers, luckily Ben had a spare set here - and flip their Math Class 2 books open.
Ben was quite good at math but the difference between the metrical and the American scales was a little trying. So Stan helped him with that and Ben helped him later with the reading.
They made a nice picture, sitting there, with their chocolate moustaches and and excited gesticulations over something they planned for the later evening.
If the stayed friends like this they would be a great team later, would help each other with every problem that might come up. Even those that were too delicateto tell their parents.
Stanley would have a good friend for every situation. A good hearted, friendly and clever friend.
Ben was sometimes sad that he wasn’t able to see his father, and sometimes appeared to be lonely. A much too blue feeling for a boy of his age.
Stan would be there for him. Take care that he would never really be lonely. They would have each other. A thought which made Mrs. Kowalski warm inside.
A calming influence on her far too easily excitable son and a companion for Ben.
It could be a great time for them. And she hoped it would work out with every fiber of her being.

But I haven't a clue what costumes they could wear.

I suppose it might be too obvious for them to go as a cop and a mountie ::sigh:: But it would make sense for little Ben to want to dress up as his father since he would be missing him so. Caroline had enough of Bob, but children make excuses for their parent's behavior so Ben probably still idolizes him. And I can imagine him cobbling together a mountie uniform as best he could-maybe a red winter coat with a belt over it, tie a yellow shoe lace around his neck, a paper hat, etc. Ray would probably go as some popular character of the time.

I look forward to reading your new story. I myself am completely rabbitless at the moment, what with my brainspace being taken up by various RL concerns with annoying deadlines attached to them. But I know it is a temporary situation and I will write again:)

I looked around online-in 1972 cowboys were still pretty popular. Gunsmoke and Bonanza were on TV, among others. There were 'spaghetti westerns' at the movies. Ray's hero Steve Mc Queen played cowboys in a few movies, the biggest being 'The Magnificent Seven.' Ray wouldn't have been born yet when it originally came out in 1960, but I imagine a city like Chicago would have theaters that play older movies. Mc Queen also starred in a TV western years before, which Ray's Dad might have told him about. Of course, Mc Queen's recent Big Deal movie was 'Bullitt,' but I'm not sure how Ray would dress up as Bullitt, besides wearing a black turtleneck and pants, a shoulder holster and badge. I think he also wore blazers in the movie. Altogether it would have Ray dressing a bit like his adult self, which could be kind of funny. Especially if Ben were dressed as a Mountie:)

Some other things from American kid's pop culture in 1972: Scooby Doo, Bozo The Clown, Planet Of The Apes, The Partridge Family.

Oh, I also think doctor shows were big on TV. With Ray's parent's aspirations for him I could see them dressing him up as a doctor and him thinking it was pretty lame but not wanting to hurt their feelings.
