Date: 2006-04-10 12:12 am (UTC)For example: Harry Potter appears in several prompts. For those of us over, um, 30? 35? 20?...that might be really tough. HP is something my kids and their friends might know about, but...I don't.

Date: 2006-04-10 02:42 am (UTC)(Anyway, I would be perfectly OK with the recipient faking it or even ignoring that part of the propmt, as the essential element is the Mary-Sue-who's-a-witch. And actually,

Date: 2006-04-10 04:07 am (UTC)What I meant, though, was that other fandoms could be kind of challenging for people significantly older (or younger, for that matter) than the target audience who aren't already part of the fandom, because fewer of us will have experience with them, and so randomly assigning them might prove a problem. I could probably get up to speed with an older fandom like Starsky & Hutch, Miami Vice, Batman & Robin, Superman, Highlander, Lord of the Rings, etc., etc., because I am already familiar with the source material, as are a high percentage of media fans my age. By the same token, Nick at Night, TV Land, and other venues have made the baby-boomers' and Gen Xers' shows available to younger fans, but a random group of them is not as likely to know the older stuff well enough to fake it, even in badfic. Is that clearer? I hope. I really didn't mean any insult.
As for my age? One thing I love about Due South is that the main characters (who are about the same age as the actors) are my contemporaries. OK, PG is a year older. CKR is just a few days older than I am.
I'm glad you don't mind if your HP witch morphs into Mary Sue Witch, but I wouldn't want to disappoint a prompter who did care, you know?

Date: 2006-04-10 05:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, we should be so lucky! Well, we'll celebrate together and we'll celebrate for him in absentia (more's the pity). :)
on my birthday, as I split the difference between yours.
Hey, cool, another Virgo. :) Is your birthday the 17th, then? Party's on!
And I gracefully cede the age crown to you by just under three years.
::wonders if that's a *good* thing:: Well, I don't look (or act...hee!) my age, so I guess I shouldn't worry. Isis of course is immortal, so I guess you don't, either. :) And CKR? Does everybody realize that when he played Newbie on Twitch City, he was like 37 or 38 years old? Going on 17. :)

Date: 2006-04-10 09:12 am (UTC)I don't envy you, but I hope you're coping with the prompts matching.
If I were you, I wouldn't be too scrupulous about respecting people's preferences. Everybody (besides those who dropped out) agreed to go along with the badfic thing. Everybody in their right minds will anticipate that their prompts will take very unexpected turns. That's the fun of badfic, if I'm correct. If I make sure to address all features of a prompt I can take it anywhere I like, can't I? Take DS/HP crossovers for instance. If I had one of those, I'd make sure Harry, Snipe and Hermione all had a few lines - and then I'd hook up Fraser with Superman, and nobody could sue me.
Says a pathetically monogamous DS-fan, who sends hate-mail to people who dare to picture Fraser in ways that aren't right (i.e. that she considers out-of-character). Badfic-wise I wouldn't hesitate to dress the Mountie in a tutu (and if the blooper reel is anything to go by, he wouldn't protest too much if I did).
