Golden yellow sunlight spilled across the bed from the gap between the curtains. He supposed he hadn't closed them properly, too used to the shadow of neighboring buildings - not to mention a sun that kept normal hours - to remember. But it wasn't the sun that had awoken him: it was the warm weight against his side.
Ray lay on his back and blinked up at a blurred wooden ceiling. His left arm was tingling with the beginning of pins and needles from being trapped under Maggie. She'd curled towards him in her sleep, and her breath lapped in slow, even intervals against his collarbone. He counted that a fair trade against the impending discomfort of the arm waking up. He smoothed down her long hair with his free hand, then pressed a kiss to the crown of her head.
Maggie stirred slightly. "Mm?"
"Sh." He kissed her again. "Go back to sleep. I think it's early."
"You think?" she mumbled. Her arm tightened across his chest, part hug, part morning stretch.
He shrugged and hissed as that caused the blood to begin to return to his arm. "Can't see the clock."
She lifted her head briefly to peer across his chest, then buried her face against his side. "It's early."
He laughed. Fraser had taken being a morning person to an extreme, and during their adventure, Ray had often nursed thoughts of homicide along with his morning coffee. He was very, very happy to discover that it wasn't an inherited trait. Actually, he was happy to discover a lot of things about Fraser's sister.
"I'm glad I came," he said, his mouth running ahead of his brain.
Maggie shifted up onto her elbow. "Even though Benton's out of town?" she asked, with the hint of a smile.
"Especially because Fraser's out of town."
"So you're saying that you meant for this to happen?"
"Absolutely. Yes." She gave him a look that clearly said she wasn't buying it. He always had to fall for women who saw through his bullshit. "Okay, well, no. But I'm glad it did."
"Me, too," she replied, and she leaned down and kissed him, as warm and slow as the sun rising outside the window.
